On the Edge
August 8th – September 12th, 2026
Sam Branden, Stacy Fisher, Charlotte Hallberg, Justine Hill, and Martha Tuttle

SUNNY NY is pleased to present On the Edge, the inaugural exhibition at our new Lake Peekskill location. Featuring work by Sam Branden, Stacy Fisher, Charlotte Hallberg, Justine Hill, and Martha Tuttle, the exhibition will be on view from August 8 to September 12, 2026.

Within the exhibition, each artist treats the support/structure of the painting as transformative. As opposed to painting’s long history of representing windows to an illusion, the artists included in On the Edge each beg the opposite: by emphasizing physical materials and non-rectangular supports to transcend the purely visual.

Sam Branden uses place, specifically New York City, as inspiration for his paintings but also as the material for the painting. His compositions are often built from found materials from the city like discarded clothing and signage. Stacy Fisher’s painted hybrids blur the boundary between image and object. Improvisational brushwork on shaped wooden supports emphasize the physicality of her work. Through her shaped canvases, Charlotte Hallberg imagines a binocular vision of zooming in on an organic world, transcending beyond the purely physical to an almost synesthetic experience. Creating an extreme figure-ground relationship between the painting and the wall, Justine Hill layers painted, cut fabric shapes into a dense structure. The resulting shaped works incorporate the negative space of the wall into the composition. Martha Tuttle’s multimedia compositions integrate sculpture, textile and painting. Using natural materials and earthen pigments, Tuttle explores the tension between the organic and the constructed.

The edge of the painting, often overlooked, here becomes ever important. In this liminal space, physical material and structure are most clearly witnessed.
